Our Fish

At Rio Palena Lodge, we primarily target rainbow trout and brown trout though anglers will also have a shot at Brookies and possiby Chinook Salmon depending on the time of their visit. The average size of the browns caught in our rivers tends to be 16-24 inches. However,  we usually see a couple of fish in the 6-8 pound range on any given float. The rainbows tend to be a little smaller in our river systems, averaging 16-22 inches in most cases.  Anytime we fish the mouth of a river near a lake, the average size increases dramatically. The lakes in our area produce huge fish on a very consistent basis as they tend to have prolific insect hatches and large numbers of smaller bait fish. Some of the lakes hold big brookies along with the trout. Rio Palena and Rio Yecho also have a decent run of chinook salmon which we target when they first enter the systems.

Chilean Browns are like the velociraptor of the  aquatic world. They lie and wait feverishsly, to pounce on and devour prey that is foolish enough to fall with in striking distance of these relentless predators. Unsuspecting young trout and salmon casually migrating though  what seem to be the quietest and safest waters, are quickly devoured, as are the numerous aquatic and...
The brook trout, also known as the speckled trout or squaretail, is one of the most beautiful of all Salmonids. Its lovely pink/red spots and blue halos, combined with orange fins edged in black and white, truly define it as a thing of beauty. It doesn't put up the acrobatic fight that the rainbow does, but it makes up for it in tenacity, endurance, and bulk. The Brook Trout (which is...
